Cavalry patrol
sky

Image by National Library of Scotland
A cavalryman sitting on his horse on a ridge. Man and horse are black, outlined against a cloudy sky. This photograph is symbolic of the last days of the use of cavalry in European warfare. Trench warfare and the broken, pitted ground, meant that the cavalry were vulnerable and of little use in this new type of fighting.

Earth Aurora (Auroral X-ray emission observed from Earth’s north polar region.)
sky

Description: The bright arcs in this Chandra image show low-energy X-rays (0.1 – 10 kilo electron volts) generated during auroral activity. The image – seen here superimposed on a simulated image of Earth – is from an approximately 20-minute scan during which Chandra was pointed at a fixed point in the sky while the Earth’s motion carried the auroral region through the field of view. Auroras are produced by solar storms that disturb Earth’s magnetic field and accelerate electrons which speed along the magnetic field into the polar regions. There the electrons collide with atoms high in Earth’s atmosphere and emit X-rays.

Creator/Photographer: Chandra X-ray Observatory

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was launched and deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. The mirrors on Chandra are the largest, most precisely shaped and aligned, and smoothest mirrors ever constructed. Chandra is helping scientists better understand the hot, turbulent regions of space and answer fundamental questions about origin, evolution, and destiny of the Universe. The images Chandra makes are twenty-five times sharper than the best previous X-ray telescope. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., manages the Chandra program for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory controls Chandra science and flight operations from the Chandra X-ray Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

An active star-forming region 160,000 light years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation Dorado.
sky

Description: Chandra’s image shows the drama of star formation and evolution as it is being played out in a nearby galaxy. At least eleven extremely massive stars with ages of about two million years are detected in the bright star cluster in the center of the primary image (left panel). The brightest source in this region is Mk 34, a 130 solar-mass star located slightly to the lower left of center. On the lower right of this panel is the supernova remnant N157B, with its central pulsar. Two off-axis ACIS-S chips (right panel) show the large shell-like supernova remnant SNR N157C. In the image, lower energy X-rays appear red, medium energy green and high-energy are blue.

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff re-shot many of the photographs collected by the institution’s scientists, including documentation of Smithsonian-sponsored expeditions as well as images of scientific phenomena.

Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie’s duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum’s installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie’s documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution’s art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

A supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud, about 160,000 light years from Earth.
sky

Description: This is a composite Chandra (X-ray/blue) and Hubble (optical/pink & purple) of N132D. The beautiful glowing horseshoe-shaped cloud of hot gas against a backdrop of thousands of stars was produced by the explosion of a massive star. Shock waves produced by the explosion heated interstellar gas around the site to X-ray emitting temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius. The optical image reveals cooler gas and a small, bright crescent-shaped cloud of emission from hydrogen gas. The star that exploded as a supernova was probably more than 20 times as massive as the Sun. Most of the stars in this image are less massive and will not go out with a bang.

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff documented the institution’s physical buildings and work spaces, including curators’ offices, new museum buildings, exhibition installations, and the furniture used to store objects.

M17: “X-ray Champagne Flow” Uncorked in Horseshoe Nebula (A young star cluster 5,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius.)
blue

Description: Chandra’s image shows hot gas flowing away from massive stars clustered in the center of the Horseshoe Nebula (pink) that are only about a million years old. This gas shows up as the red regions, which have temperatures ranging from about 1.5 million degrees Celsius (2.7 million degrees Fahrenheit) to about 7 million degrees Celsius (13 million degrees F). Collisions between high-speed winds of particles flowing away from the massive stars could heat the gas, or the hot gas could be produced as these winds collide with cool clouds to form bubbles of hot gas. This hot gas appears to be flowing out of the Horseshoe like champagne flows out of a bottle when the cork is removed, so it has been termed an "X-ray champagne flow."
