What is a good small tank fish and what plastic tanks are safe?

August 7th, 2011 2 comments

Question by Melinda H: What is a good small tank fish and what plastic tanks are safe?
I’m possibly getting a new fish. I want to get a plastic or glass vase from Walmart and just get a small fish but I only know of one fish that can survive in such a small tank and that’s the Betta. So I need to know what plastics are safe for fish and I want to know if any other fish can survive in such a small tank. Thanks ahead of time!

Best answer:

Answer by FFAFish
A Betta fish can not even. No fish can live in plastic tanks or vases. they all need real tanks with heaters and filters and proper weekly water changes and a varied diet. Fish are not toys. how would you like me to lock you in a 6 inch room with no air, lights, a flake or pellet once a day, no heat, and no filter and no toilet? you wouldnt like it either. Niether would the fish. Get a 10 gallon tank and cycle your tank properly. Then get small schooling fish Eg. neon tetras.

Note: goldfish need very large tanks. they are large and messy

Question by Kevin L.: What is a good fish to subistitute for cat-fish in recipes such as gumbo?
I have become interested in trying my hand at Creole and Cajun style cooking, and have seen some intriguing recipes that call for the use of cat-fish. However, after searching some local specialty fish shops and markets ( here in Vancouver, Canada ) I have come out empty-handed. So what is an appropriate substitute for cat-fish in this sort of dish?

get 1-2 gouramies.

i have 4 dwarf gouramies.
they all are great.
they are beautiful and add some real color.

heres a pic of one http://www.aqua-fish.net/imgs/fish/colisa-lalia.jpg

they only get up to 2 in a half inches.

i had my 4 in a 30 with 8 neons,6 guppies,and them./

you could also get some very bright guppies.but they only get up yto like a inch.

good luck!

BTW goldfish are cold water there temps are.60-74.

http://www.elmersaquarium.com/c106community11goldfish.htm

you have tropical your fish temps should be between 78-82

so do not put a goldfish.they should not be mixed.

p.s. add some salt to your tank.even fresh water fish need salt.just buy some at petsmart and add as much as it says.ussally its a tablespoon per 5 gallons.

even look at the fish lables at petsmart each one says needs salt.
and it makes your fish brighter,.

Q&A: What are good starter fish for a saltwater tank?

June 29th, 2011 2 comments

Question by J P: What are good starter fish for a saltwater tank?
I have a 55 gallon saltwater reef tank with live rock, live sand, and anemones What are some good starter fish for my saltwater tank, and what are some good fish that can go together. For example, freshwater has community fish like mollys and neons, and semi aggressive fish like angels and silver dollars, then aggressive fish like Oscars. So i guess wat im asking is what fish belong to what group so i can decide what group id like to have in my tank.

Best answer:

Answer by Joseph Lorentzen
Actually, you mentioned a couple that work well like Mollies. I’ve seen many that have been slowly transferred from brackish water to full ocean salt.

If you will forgive me, your tank suggests the first fish and that is the anemone fish. There are numerous species and some remain very small. http://www.starfish.ch/reef/anemonefish.html
The biggest problem is having enough algae for them.

Here is a calculator to check on bio-load, itis not the only one, but there is a place on this one to change to marine fish. http://aqadvisor.com

Consumers Urged To Eat Farmed Fish This Good Friday Says Cell Aquaculture Limited Chairman Robert Sewell

Consumers Urged To Eat Farmed Fish This Good Friday Says Cell Aquaculture Limited Chairman Robert Sewell

(PRWEB) April 11, 2006

Consumers have been urged to consume farmed fish instead of wild caught stocks this Good Friday.

Eating fish on the Good Friday of Easter is a traditional Christian penitential observance.

Chairman of the listed seafood company Cell Aquaculture Limited (ASX: CAQ), Robert Sewell believes consumers should now be questioning retailers about the source of fish being sold.

“Over-fishing is depleting wild caught fish stocks and we need to find alternatives now,” said Mr Sewell.

The chronic over-fishing of natural seafood stocks is due to an enormous demand for high quality premium seafood produce because of the health benefits of eating fish.

“Eating fish is really, really good for you. Not only is it packed with vitamins and minerals, it is also a major source of omega-3 fatty acids, and recent studies have found this lowers the chance of heart attack, makes babies smarter and wards off dementia and stroke in the elderly,” said Mr Sewell.

Alternatives need to be found and production in sea cages in the ocean is not necessarily the answer because of the impact on the environment according to Mr Sewell who also farms a 4,000-hectare family grain property at Wongan Hills, east of Perth.

“The solution is land-based fish farming of species like barramundi because it is environmentally sustainable and meets the increasing demand for fish as part of a healthy diet,” he said.

Cell Aquaculture is a global leader in developing land-based systems for growing high quality premium fish everywhere in the world in a controlled, environmentally sustainable environment.

“Land based fish faming is 10 to 15 years behind the poultry and pig industries and our goal is to take the risk out of growing fish as well as making consumers more aware of where the fish they eat is coming from,” Mr Sewell said.

“In a world where demand for quality seafood is increasing, the need to supply adequate quantities of seafood to an aging and increasingly health-conscious world population highlights the vital importance of looking to environmentally sustainable land-based systems of seafood production,” Mr Sewell said.

About Cell Aqua

Cell Aqua listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in July 2005 to supply a full range of environmentally sustainable sea food services. Cell Aqua have successfully built and is commissioning its first European production facility in the Netherlands and aim to be a global company involved in all aspects of the production and sale of quality high end priced seafood.

Q&A: is this a good flyfishing pack?

May 22nd, 2011 2 comments

Question by wana bigger bike: is this a good flyfishing pack?
i am looking for a good yet inexpensive vest/backpack for flyfishing if you have one of these plz tell me what you think of it and what its held up like
i am looking at the “Cabelas River GuideX20 3 in 1 chest vest

Best answer:

Answer by AIRFLOW
The pack looks ok, although i don’t own one. I generally use a fly vest or fly vest and pack combo. The only problem i think you might have with that chest pack is that its shoulder straps aren’t well padded-after a long day on the river etc you will start to notice this.

I would suggest this instead, although it doesn’t have a pack it should hold a lot of gear and the waterproof magnets means no zippers to catch tippet or fly lines on and its easy one and opening.

I also think that the fabric should be tougher, as its William Joseph, its a good pack.

What is a good 2-3wt flyfishing rod that is in the 5-6′ range?

February 18th, 2011 Comments off

Question by David U: What is a good 2-3wt flyfishing rod that is in the 5-6′ range?

Best answer:

Answer by donmccoy63
there are MANY good 2-3 wt rods out there, a lot depends on how much you are willing to spend-

I am not aware of any 5 ft fly rods, you CAN find some 6 ft rods- in the 2-3 wt range, you are more likely looking at 7 ft 6 In rods.

If money is no object- then I highly recommend Sage, Loomis, Scott, and Winston rods.

If you are on a budget, then Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) makes excellent rods. Also check out Redington, and Cortland for some great rods that are not quite as expensive.

if you are looking or a 2-3 wt, I am assuming you intend to fish for smaller fish on smaller waters, or fussy trout where presentation is a big concern.

I don’t know how familiar you are with flyfishing, but if you don’t already know, these weight rods will NOT throw a big weighted nymph with much grace, and will be nearly useless in the wind unless you buy a top quality rod, and even then, its a problem.

I bought a 4 wt TFO, and underlined it with a 3 wt line- this gives the rod extra power to fight the wind, but still get the delicacy of a 3 wt line for presentation.

You have to work a little harder to get the rod to load at short distances, since the line is slightly too light for the rod, but once you get some distance to the cast, the rod picks up the slack and does fine.

If it was me and I was going to buy a new 2-3 wt, I would buy
a 7 ft 6 in Sage Z Axis 4 pc travel rod in a 3 wt.. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

Question by Ya Boy R: What is a good fishing rod for fishing just about most fresh water fish?
I live in NJ an love too fish. I just bought a shimano ultra light fishing pole an next week i will buy a reel too complement the pole. I am curious to know if a made the right chose in poles. And y do they call it a spinning rod?

P.S. I bought it because i perfer a light pole over a Rhyno medium pole i used too use.

Best answer:

Answer by bosoxnolan
To answer your first question, a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod will handle anything you can possibly throw at it. Available in many different weights/lengths, it is one of the strongest, least expensive rods on the market.

It is called a spinning rod because it goes with a spinning, or open-faced reel. The spool and bail spin, taking up line.

The Value of Good Sea Fishing Tackle Line

January 19th, 2011 Comments off

How important do you think the line is on a good sea fishing tackle? Any experienced fisherman will tell you that a good line makes all the difference in the world when you are out there on a boat far off the shore and fishing in saltwater. A line that is just the right strength and weight and is kept in good condition on a sea fishing tackle will help you immensely in making sure that you get the fish you are struggling to catch right into your boat.

We guarantee much better
