Question by Ryan: What native fish is best to put in a 55 Gallon tank?
By native I mean fish that I can obtain in nearby lakes or ponds (I live near Memphis, TN). I would prefer 2 or more in the tank. If you can think of some then do you know the necessities for them? . I don’t want fish that are too dirty or smelly.
If you can’t think of some then do you have any other suggestions for neat fish to keep?
I already have a 10 gallon with guppies and platies.

It depends on what you’re looking for. If you want something large and cichlid like, Tennessee is home to numerous species of sunfish. Darters are great little fish that do excellent on the bottom. If you’re looking for schooling fish there are various shiners, chubs, and other minnows. Madtoms are fascinating catfish, although they do have a sting. I would avoid sculpins because it is difficult to keep your tank cool enough for them in the summer.
Here is a list of native fishes of Tennessee, look through it, decide what you want, and research to see if you can keep it.

When you go to the fish store, ask the store clerk for suggestions. That is a good sized tank, so you should be able to put quite a few in there. A nice “community” group would be cool – neons, zebras, sword tails, moons, mollies, catfish…They all get along pretty well.

it depends on the surface area of the tank not the gallons as many people would say but a normal 10 gallon tank can take 1 3 inch fish and tropical because goldfish aren’t good fish

i would get a schooling fish like neon or cardinal tetra. Maybe some cory cats. The reason for this is they dont get very big and they wont mind the small space while also being some of the most beautiful fish you could buy.

ummm you can put freshwater clams…lets see as someone told me glassfish glass catfish umm gouramis, tetras,a betta, corydoras? and such. but watch out for types of fish put the peacefull fish of course with other peacefull

The koi would outgrow the 10 gallon tank in about a month, or less. A fantail goldfish would be a good match for such a small tank.

You shouldn’t keep anything with goldfish but goldfish. Goldfish get big and require big tanks. Do your research next time before getting fish.

south american dwarf cichlids. but only if you have enough experience, their kinda hard to take care of them. search them on websites, their amazingg fish, and very colorful. but i also suggest to get a school of non cichlids, it makes them relax. best of luckk!

If you like colourful fish Neon Tetras are good. They are smaller fish with bold colours. Guppies are pretty as well but apparently it’s hard to tell sex because often you wake up with more fish the next morning than the night before.
