Description: A long Chandra observation of Tycho has revealed a pattern of X-ray stripes never seen before in a supernova remnant. The stripes are seen in the high-energy X-rays (blue) that also show the blast wave, a shell of extremely energetic electrons. Low-energy X-rays (red) show expanding debris from the supernova explosion. The stripes, seen to the lower right of this composite image that includes optical data from the Digitized Sky Survey, may provide the first direct evidence that a cosmic event can accelerate particles to energies a hundred times higher than achieved by the most powerful particle accelerator on Earth.

2005 Powwow
blue

Description: Powwows are large social gatherings of Native Americans who follow traditional dances started centuries ago by their ancestors, and which continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events of drum music, dancing, singing, artistry and food, are attended by Natives and non-Natives, all of whom join in the dancing and take advantage of the opportunity to see old friends and teach the traditional ways to a younger generation. During the National Powwow, the audience see dancers in full regalia compete in several dance categories, including Men and Women’s Golden Age (ages 50 and older); Men’s Fancy Dance, Grass and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Women’s Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Teens (13-17); Juniors (6-12) and Tiny Tots (ages 5 and younger). The drum groups are the heart of all powwows and provide the pulsating and thunderous beats that accompany a dancer’s every movement. The powwow is led by three "host drums" that showcase three distinct styles of singing (Northern, Southern and contemporary) and represent the best examples of each style. The drum contest highlights groups of 10 to 12 members each, and they sing traditional family songs that are passed down orally from one generation to the next. The National Museum of the American Indian sponsored the National Powwow in 2002, 2005, and 2007 as a way of presenting to the public the diversity and social traditions of contemporary Native cultures.

Why is there such a common misconception about the sky being blue?

October 16th, 2011 6 comments

Question by N!ck: Why is there such a common misconception about the sky being blue?
Whenever ive run into questions asking why the sky is blue, a good amount of people answer saying the sky is blue because of the color of the ocean. How did this misconception come about and why is it so common?

Best answer:

Answer by gintable
Because they obviously have never gone to Kansas and wondered why the sky isn’t yellow or green there.

Description: Chandra’s image of this supernova remnant shows a bright ring of high-energy particles with a central point-like source. This observation enabled scientists to use the giant Arecibo Radio Telescope to search for and locate the pulsar, or neutron star that powers the ring. The ring of particles and two jet-like structures appear to be due to the energetic flow of radiation and particles from the rapidly spinning neutron star rotating 7 times per second. These discoveries will help scientists better understand how neutron stars channel enormous amounts of energy into particles moving near the speed of light.

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff were responsible for collecting and duplicating images brought back by scientists and curators traveling on business in other cities throughout the world, many of which often described the structures of other museums.

Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie’s duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum’s installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie’s documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution’s art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

How do I go about dyeing my hair blue?

October 8th, 2011 3 comments

Question by Shaun: How do I go about dyeing my hair blue?
I really like blue. I’ve tried dyeing it that way twice before. The first time, I just used blue dye (my hair is overall light brown but ranges blonde to dark brown) and it just ended up looking brown with a blue tinge. So the second time I bleached my hair blonde (almost got it in my eye) then dyed it blue, but it looked pretty horrible till I was able to get the blue dye again.

So I’m back to college in 2 weeks and don’t need to worry about employers. Is it worth looking into having it done at a hairdresser? Just the bleaching or would they even carry blue dye? Any other suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by Rae
I’m a stylist and I would have you buy blue dye, like Manic Panic, and bring it in. I would bleach your hair out for you, then apply the blue.

Check out these blue images:

NGC 6240 (An extremely luminous galaxy about 400 million light years from Earth.)
blue

Description: The peculiar butterfly shape of NGC 6240 was caused by the collision of two smaller galaxies. Chandra’s high-resolution image of the galaxy’s central region revealed not one, but two active giant black holes. Over the course of the next few hundred million years, the two supermassive black holes, which are about 3000 light years apart, will drift toward one another and merge to form one larger supermassive black hole. The relatively recent merger (30 million years) that formed this galaxy triggered a dramatic increase in the rate of star formation and supernova explosions. Heat generated by this activity created the extensive multimillion degree Celsius gas seen in this image. The red, green, and blue colors represent low, medium and high X-ray energies, respectively.

Description: This composite image of Eta Carinae from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope shows the remnants of a massive eruption from the star during the 1840s. The X-ray data (yellow) show where material from that explosion has collided with nearby gas and dust. The optical data (blue) reveals material ejected from the star has formed a bipolar structure. Chandra detects a faint X-ray reflection off the inner optical nebula due to the collision of stellar winds between Eta Carinae and a suspected companion star. suburbs. Because it is only approximately 25,000 light years from Earth, the center of our galaxy provides an excellent laboratory for learning about the cores of other galaxies.

Description: This image of NGC 4194 is a composite of X-rays from Chandra (blue) and optical light data from Hubble (orange). Located above the center of the galaxy, the "hair" of the Medusa is a tidal tail formed by a collision between galaxies. The bright X-ray source found on the left side of Medusa’s hair is a black hole. Cartwheel Galaxy: Astronomers Do Flips Over Cartwheel Galaxy
blue

Description: This image combines data from four different wavelengths of light: infrared (red), visible (green), ultraviolet (blue), and X-ray(purple). The unusual shape of the Cartwheel Galaxy is likely due to a collision with one of the smaller galaxies on the lower left several hundred million years ago. The smaller galaxy produced compression waves in the gas of the Cartwheel as it plunged through it. These compression waves trigger bursts of star formation. The most recent star burst has lit up the Cartwheel’s rim, which has a diameter larger than that of the Milky Way Galaxy, with millions of bright young stars. The bright, white X-ray sources on the rim (see inset) are due to matter falling into black holes left behind by the explosion of massive stars.

It’s Time To Learn More About Keeping Fish Healthy

(Vocus) March 31, 2010

Just in time for spring, anglers and recreational boaters in the nation’s midsection are hearing disturbing news about their recreational waterways.

With evidence that the voracious Asian carp is threatening the Great Lakes and that the contagious fish disease VHS, or viral hemorrhagic septicemia, is now in waters as far north and west as Lake Superior, fishing and boating enthusiasts might be concerned that their favorite spots may be ruined. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) notes that prime waters can still be protected by the people who use them, particularly small bodies of water, streams and rivers where diseases and destructive invaders have not been detected.

APHIS offers a list of surprisingly simple steps to be taken to preserve the health of wild fish species for generations to come:

1.    Thoroughly clean and dry all fishing and boating equipment including bait buckets, boots, boats, and trailers with HOT water.

2.    Empty all water from equipment including buckets and bilges.

3.    Remove all visible mud, plants and aquatic life from equipment before transporting.

4.    Do not move fish and plants from one body of water to another.

5.    Buy bait from certified bait dealers and dispose of unused bait in a secure trash area away from the water.

For more information, visit http://www.FocusOnFishHealth.org .

I have seen questions about fish on here that make me sick. Someone wanted to put a Jack Dempsey a Severum and a Convict chilid with twenty other things in one tank.
JJ i’m talking about people who wake up and buy fish. No reaserch. If u open any book it tells u have 30 40 50 gallons for goldfish. It’s not that hard to figure out things like that.

Ask About Fly Fishing – Internet Radio and the Federation of Fly Fishers Combine Efforts to Attract More to the Sport

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 29, 2006

The American Fly Fishing Trade Association reports that over 18 million adults in America have an unfulfilled interest in fly fishing. Dr. Ron Cordes, FFF vice-chairman states, “Newcomers and youngsters are the future of our sport. Their use of the Internet makes Internet radio a natural medium for our drive to increase membership, and further enhance our educational and conservation programs”.

In addition to promoting educational opportunities such as the annual Conclave (July 25-29 in Bozeman, MT), the Federation of Fly Fishers supports many conservation initiatives of importance to fly fishers. Currently, an International Fly Tying Competition is being held to support Federation programs.

Ask About Fly Fishing – Internet Radio offers interviews of industry experts, who answer questions from the audience. The live program offers a unique call-in Q&A session, and the show can be heard as a live or recorded webcast, or a podcast. The AAFF website provides a link to the national Federation of Fly Fishers’ website, as well as fly fishing clubs, fly shops and guides. A comprehensive national events calendar for shows, meetings, demonstrations, and all fly fishing related events is also planned.

The next live broadcast will be April 5th at 7:00 PM (MT) and will feature Barry Reynolds expert fly fisherman, speaker and author. His recently published book “Mastering Pike on the Fly” teaches fly fishers how to catch monster pike. On the show Reynolds will answer questions about successfully fishing for these challenging explosive fish.

D. Roger Maves and Don Bishop, founders and co-hosts of AAFF, regard education and conservation as the cornerstones of a bright fishing future. They say, “Smarter fly fishers are more successful, bring more friends to it, and purchase more equipment, guide services, magazines, etc. They are best able to address issues which will continue to make quality fishing available to future generations.”

Membership in the Federation of Fly Fishers offers newcomers a host of opportunities, and even includes some freebies! For more details on the organization and membership go to the Federation of Fly Fishers’ web site, http://www.FedFlyFishers.org.

Question by Randy: What dangerous fish do you have to worry about when swimming in south Florida?
I remember someone saying something about tiger sharks and jelly fish. Nobody ever mentioned the long king fish we found in the water while deep sea fishing. The pelicans were more intimidating than anything though. Would it be probable to rule out an attack from a great white shark in south Florida? What other kinds of dangerous fish do you have to watch out for in place like Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach?

“Kruger’s Gold” — New Military Historical Novel of the Anglo-Boer War Reveals Unpalatable Facts About Both Sides

(PRWEB) August 31, 2005

It follows the fortunes of Lt. Harry Lanyard, a Canadian junior officer serving in the British Army with Howard’s Scouts, an actual elite mounted regiment of the time, commanded by the American soldier of fortune, Major “Gat” Howard.

Field Marshal Kitchener releases Lanyard from a court-martial charge of murdering an enemy prisoner, so he may lead a patrol to recover fifteen million dollars’ worth of gold buried somewhere in the veld.

The hoard of bullion — an historical reality, parts of which are still being searched for to this day — was looted from Boer banks on orders of “Oom Paul” Kruger, fugitive President of the Transvaal Republic before he fled to exile in Europe.

To find it, Lanyard is given a mixed unit of hard-riding Canadian, Australian, Afrikaner, and British cavalrymen. Leading them on his quest, he must battle tough burgher commandos, roving bandits, hostile civilians, and a vengeful enemy spy among his own mutinous troopers. Meanwhile, he also strives to regain the love of his half-American Boer sweetheart, who is now allied with a ruthless Czarist agent.

The novel is based on many actual events, and meticulously researched in everyday details of the period, from tactics to weaponry, horse-handling, and medical conditions. It conveys the war even-handedly from both the Boer and British points of view, conveying peoples’ social attitudes and prejudices as they actually were at dawn of the 20th century.

Though written as fast-paced fiction, KRUGER’S GOLD also conveys factual military realities and social conditions of the era — including British “scorched earth” policy, civil war among the Afrikaner Boers, the oft-forgotten role of Anglo-South Africans, victimization of black Africans, and the political split between Canadians for and against the war.

This fast-paced novel unblinkingly reveals the horrors of British-run concentration camps and ruthless guerilla fighting, while over 27,000 white civilians and 30,000 black Africans died in the “last of the gentleman’s wars”.

KRUGER’S GOLD was declared Editor’s Choice by the Canadian Book Review Annual in 2004, and described by Amazon as “simply a marvelous read.”

Question by Moe F: Is flyfishing on lakes productive because that is about the only option I have and I really want to flyfish?
I don’t know much about fly fishing and I wanted to know because I wanted to buy a beginnner fishing rod and reel but my dad is telling me that you don’t catch very much fly fishing on lakes but hes never actually fly fished before so I’m not going to give up that easily. So if anyone knows about flyfishing on lakes that would be great especially if they had some tips. Thanks for all of your help.

Answer by askmrknight
Been fishing since I was a youngster, and I’m 50 now.

Your dad is right. You’re not going to be very successful at fly fishing on a lake. Fly fishing (the act of using a lure shaped like one of several species of flying insects) was invented, and is applicable to the sport when done in very shallow water, likes streams and rivers.

The fish in a lake typically feed closer to the mid to bottom levels of the water. Fish do not break the surface to eat when they are in a lake. The exception would be the very shallow portion of a lake or pond. You may see more success fly fishing in these waters.

In a river or stream the fish has no alternative but to feed off of the surface, and that’s what makes fly fishing such an enjoyable sport.

Hope that helps answer your question.

Ha wow never really thought about it but when I was younger I thought fly fisherman were so cool which they are. Sometimes the fish sees the fly above the water and takes it after the fly hits the water for .0001 second which I find amazing. It’s cool to see someone way good cast on a big river.

Answer by bosoxnolan
To answer your first question, a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod will handle anything you can possibly throw at it. Available in many different weights/lengths, it is one of the strongest, least expensive rods on the market.

It is called a spinning rod because it goes with a spinning, or open-faced reel. The spool and bail spin, taking up line.
